Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder : Biological Characteristics
Joo I-Jin

Abstract
The view that mania in children is extremely rare or nonexistent has been increasingly challenged by many case reports. Although the pathophysiology of pediatric bipolar disorder remains uncertain, some colleagues offer an interesting perspective on the subject. There are several lines of evidence indicating that pediatric bipolar disorder cases may prove the most useful for identifying susceptibility genes, due to a greater genetic role in early-onset cases and less genetic heterogeneity. For elucidating the neurobiological feature of pediatric bipolar disorder, it was reviewed the studies with structural and functional neuroimaging techniques. Since the studies of pediatric bipolar disorder should be viewed the fact that the phenotype is complex and comorbid with many other disorder including ADHD, future studies should address the range of the phenotype, its discrimination from other comorbid disorder, and its continuity with late-onset bipolar disorder.
